App Store issue with Scanner Pro 4.1 (the story goes on as Apple removes all comments)

5 July, 2012

Scanner Pro, Uncategorized

Yesterday the Scanner Pro 4.1 hit the App Store. Immediately, our team received tens of emails about the update crashing on start. Simultaneously, reports showed that the same issue also affects other popular applications, including Instapaper by Marco Arment.

The problem was in the App Store distribution system. iTunes servers were sending corrupted application packages to many users, mostly in the US and UK. Sometimes immediate reinstall worked. For others, it took several hours to receive a valid archive.

We have contacted Apple about this issue, but haven’t heard back yet. Meanwhile, the issue is almost fixed and we only receive occasional emails about it.

Update: After all the hype yesterday in major tech press: TechCrunch, VentureBeat, GigaOm, Gurdian, etc. Apple has released an official statement:

“We had a temporary issue that began yesterday with a server that generated DRM code for some apps being downloaded,” Apple said in a statement to AllThingsD. Apple said it affected only a small number of users.
“The issue has been rectified and we don’t expect it to occur again”.

In order to bring justice, Apple has decided to remove some comments of corrupted apps on the App Store, since many of those get 1-star ratings from angry users. However, this is a very questionable move.
Scanner Pro has already had 30+ great reviews from users, who were happy about the update (obviously, they have installed the uncorrupted binary). This will affect the whole ecosystem negatively, as the new users won’t be able to get information about the apps, generated by existent users. It seems that some comments from yesterday are still there, but they cannot be seen since the update is already in the AppStore.
Undoubtedly, Apple is trying to solve the issue the best way possible. For example, they have manually removed some of the 1-star rating from Marco’s Instapaper, but there are a few negative reviews about Scanner Pro from 4-5th of July.

Apple has just now pushed the update for all corrupted apps once again. So head to the App Store and download the update for Scanner Pro 4.1 once again.

We will appreciate if you leave some reviews in the App Store so the new users can learn from your experience how awesome Scanner Pro is ;)

    1. Readdle says:

Guys, if you want to keep your documents – do not reinstall the app. Download the new update from the AppStore and everything should work.

Great update thanks ! But how can I get back my documents ?

    1. Readdle says:

Jeremy, did you delete Scanner Pro? Have you synced with Dropbox?
If you deleted it to be reinstalled – I am afraid we can’t help you. If you still have the “corrupted” version, you can get your files via iTunes.

  6. Brian says:

I downloaded my app for the first time at about 4pm on Saturday July 7. It sounds like it should have been resolved. However, after scanning a whole folder of documents, it crashed and I lost all of that work. What can I do? I have reinstalled it, but I don’t want to go to all of that work just to lose it again.

    1. Readdle says:

Brian, can you please drop us an e-mail at rdsupport@readdle.com with more details?

  7. Brian says:

By the way, it crashed while I was cropping documents.

  8. john says:

Does this mean that the documents on the original app are lost and non recoverable from any soource since I
    re-installed the app

  9. Anu says:

I just bought the app yesterday, Aug 6, and every time I press “Add page from camera” it crashes. I take it this is the same problem as before?

I tried deleting the app from my phone and going back to the app store on my phone to download it again, but that didn’t help. When I go to iTunes on my computer, I only see “downloaded” on the app so I assume I have the latest version. Suggestions?

    HELP!

I’m very frustrated right now- I had scanned in some W-9 tax documents at the beginning of this month (Sept 7th to be exact.) I no longer have the hard copy of the these files and was counting on being able to print these documents as needed from scanner pro. I opened the files 2 days ago to verify that they were there and everything seemed fine.

However, today I attempted to open the file and I’m getting the following error “Document Failed to Download” and while it shows a blank placeholder, the thumbnail of the actual scan is missing!

I wasn’t even aware that I had enabled iCloud storage with this app and I can only assume that the file was either not sent correctly or has somehow been lost or corrupted.

Obviously, these are incredibly important files and I pray I can get them back, as not being able to is going to create a whole host of problems for me.

    Please Help!

    Michael

    1. Readdle says:

      Michael,

Sorry to hear that! As you have noticed correctly it is likely to be an iCloud issue.

Let’s hope those files are in iCloud and we can get them back.

Please go to Settings on your iPad and tap iCloud. Set Documents&Data off. Then wait for a minute or two and turn Documents&Data on again.

After that please relaunch Scanner Pro and let me know if your scans were loaded successfully.

If not, connect your iPhone to iTunes and see if there are any files backed up.

Let us know how did it work.

I too have lost documents in Scanner Pro. Last August, I lost several documents and it appeared to be iCloud related. I toggled use iCloud off and figured that would be it. Since then I have lost more files. Unfortunately the good back ups were overwritten by corrupted files and the data was lost. In one case, I was able to retrieve thumbnail png files using iExplorer and they were just big enough to work with.

I contacted support a couple of days ago and got no response.

I really like what this app does and hoped that it could play a major part in my work flow as a teacher—allowing me to archive student work. The loss or corruption of data leaves me uneasy. It certainly keeps me from recommending it to others.

I will refrain from reviewing it pending a satisfactory resolution.
