Review: OneDisk

There are many file management applications for the iPhone, but only a few companies do it well. When personally choosing an iPhone file management application I look at an application's user interface first. I look to see if the interface looks good because most often I have found that anyone capable of creating a good looking application for the iPhone most certainly has all of their digital ducks in a row. This is not always the case, but often it is a decent guide.

After playing with OneDisk by Readdle I can conclude that the results are pleasing to the eye and provide enough functionality to appease most users. Readdle's OneDisk is a $8.00 file viewer for the iPhone designed to view all of the precious files that you have uploaded to your MobileMe iDisk, Box.net, or other WEBDAV file server. OneDisk is both flashy and surprisingly fast for a file viewer application. It allows you to view, email, bookmark, and download your files. Most of the permium file viewers on the iPhone let you view, email, and download your documents, but very few of them manage to pull off the bookmarking function very well. OneDisk does a good job of this and allow you to bookmark multiple sections of any given file, which is a nice touch.

The application does give you the ability to upload and manage your files on your online disks, but this feature serves mainly to distribute files among your various online storage websites because the application does not actually let you upload or download files via wifi. If you want a wireless USB key, look at Readdle's Flash Drive instead. OneDisk does also allow you to turn it into a "book reader" by supporting common e-book formats. However, I will never use this feature because of the plethora of great dedicated e-book readers you can find on the iPhone. The OneDisk does not function very well at all a book reader because it does not format the text to the screen and forces you to do a lot of navigating to read the book and having your books scroll downward is a little bit of an awkward experience. Also, it lacks a way to easily find books to read, which is too much work considering I can get the Kindle application for free with access to its online store.

Despite failing as an e-reader OneDisk does exceed in an odd way. Although not really advertised, OneDisk does the ability to wirelessly upload your iPhone's photos to your iDisk. I honestly did not expect this feature, but OneDisk does have a nice ability to upload photos to your iDisk, which is great if you want to wireless back up your pictures.

So, other than the e-book experience this is a pretty nice little iDisk file viewer. The application does what it is designed to do with style and speed. As nice as this application is I have trouble recommending it over other file viewers, especially considering Readdle's own top product, Readdledocs , is only $2 more expensive. At the moment the application is $5 in the iTunes store and I suggest picking it up if you are interested, but I cannot honestly recommend this application at its standard price.
